Grant Analysis

Purpose & Target

This grant, part of the AfriFOODlinks project, aims to financially support pioneering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in specific African hub cities. The core objective is to improve these MSMEs' circularity, internal processes, and capabilities to meet market demands for healthy and nutritious diets, while also facilitating access to other private funding through a blended finance approach. - SECTOR-SPECIFIC: This grant is specifically for businesses operating within the food system. - Target recipient type: Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). - Target recipient size: Businesses with 1 to 50 staff members and active annual revenue not higher than €50,000. - Geographic scope: Limited to MSMEs operating in five specific AfriFOODlinks Hub Cities: Mbale (Uganda), Kisumu (Kenya), Cape Town (South Africa), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), and Tunis (Tunisia). - Key filtering criteria: Must be an MSME within the food system, located in one of the specified hub cities, and have participated in the AfriFOODlinks incubation and training programs. - Grant frequency: This is an open call, part of a cascade fund mechanism from the AfriFOODlinks project.

Financial Structure

This grant provides direct financial support to eligible MSMEs. - The total budget dedicated to this grant call is €250,000. - Grants per successful applicant will range between €1,000 and €50,000. - A total of €50,000 is available per Hub City, supporting up to 15 applicants per city. - Funds will be released in tranches, with the schedule determined by the Selection Committee and outlined in the grant agreement. - The grant aims to improve MSMEs' circularity, internal processes, and capabilities; funds should be deployed to grow the business and its impact, not primarily to benefit external beneficiaries. - The grant support is envisioned to facilitate access to other private funding (loan, equity) as part of a blended finance approach, implying the grant can be combined with other financial mechanisms, but no mandatory co-financing percentage is stated for this grant itself. - There are no specific eligible/ineligible cost categories detailed, but the general purpose is to improve the MSME's operations and capabilities related to circular food systems.
