Candidates must have a research or health-professional doctoral degree
Must be based in the United States
Candidates must demonstrate potential to become productive independent investigators
Current and former PDs/PIs on certain NIH grants are not eligible

Pathway to launch independent research careers
Become competitive for new research project grants (e.g., R01)
Candidates must work with a mentor who is an active investigator in the area of proposed research
Candidates must identify a mentor to supervise their career development and research experience
NIH will contribute up to $75,000 per year toward salary and $30,000 per year for research development costs
Indirect Costs reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs
Earliest submission date: May 13, 2024
Multiple application due dates until February 17, 2027

Applications must include a detailed research plan and career development plan
Applications will be evaluated for scientific and technical merit
