To support high impact ideas that may lay the foundation for new fields of investigation within the mission of NIDDK.
Encourages interdisciplinary approaches to generate research resources and foster discovery-based science.
Research community, healthcare providers, and patients affected by diabetes, digestive, and kidney diseases.
Eligible organization types include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local and state governments, and tribal governments.
Non-domestic entities (foreign organizations) are not eligible to apply, but non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are allowed.
Applications are open to U.S. organizations, with specific exclusions for non-domestic entities.
Projects must address significant knowledge gaps and scientific opportunities.
Applications should propose innovative, high-impact research that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration.
No budget limit, but the proposed budget must reflect actual project needs.
Cost sharing is not required.
Application due date is October 15, 2027.
Projects can have a maximum duration of 5 years.
Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each is scientifically distinct.
The NIH will not accept duplicate or highly overlapping applications under review at the same time.

Applications will be evaluated based on scientific merit, innovation, and feasibility.
Applications will undergo peer review and be assessed for scientific and technical merit.
Relevance to NIDDK's mission and programmatic priorities will be considered.
Consultation with NIDDK staff is encouraged at least 3 months prior to application submission.
Applications not responsive to the NOFO will not be reviewed.
Encouragement for interdisciplinary research teams to enhance study design and applicability.
Projects that demonstrate significant public health benefits and integration into the broader research community will be prioritized.
Demonstrating innovation and addressing high-priority research areas.
Submitting applications that overlap significantly with other pending applications.
Engage with NIDDK staff early in the application process.
Highlight the interdisciplinary nature of the research and its potential impact on health equity.
